The Lufthansa Group is launching City Airlines, a brand-new Munich-based regional airline, just as the new year is getting underway. The announcement comes as the German national airline plans to boost its position in Europe by growing its network of local routes.
The new regional subsidiary of Lufthansa, which was established in 2022 as part of the “CityLine 2.0” initiative, stated that it will open its doors in the middle of 2023 but did not provide a specific date. City Airlines is now hiring and seeking a team of experts with a variety of backgrounds, talents, and perspectives who can think creatively.
With an all-Airbus fleet, City Airlines will concentrate on short- to medium-distance flights. According to a report by Aviator, the Airbus A319 model, which has a capacity of 160 passengers, would most likely be part of the fleet.
The new subsidiary of the German behemoth seeks to bring together the excellence of Lufthansa with the knowledge of another division, Lufthansa CityLine. The following are listed by Lufthansa Group on its new website:
“We are thrilled to fly daily from our home base in Munich to major European cities and remote regions. As a new airline in the Lufthansa Group, we combine the quality of Lufthansa and the experience of Lufthansa CityLine with the dynamism of a new young company.”
Carsten Sophr, the chief executive of Lufthansa, indicated that the company was planning to start a new regional airline in Germany during the annual results press conference held the previous year. The new regional carrier was anticipated to coexist alongside its regional subsidiary CityLine.
The development of the new carrier could “provide an opportunity to hire about 250 captains that were active with Germanwings,” according to Sophr.
